Deadboy & The Elephantmen - We Are Night Sky

This is a rock and roll group from Louisiana consisting of Dax Riggs and Tessie Brunet. Dax is the former vocalist for the sludge legends Acid Bath and the more bluesy stoner-ish Agents of Oblivion. Acid Bath is pretty much the reason why I got into sludge in the first place and is perhaps my personal favorite work of his. But this is completely different. This is The White Stripes meets Bright Eyes. There is a country twang but I think he's still angry and drinks alot. They broke up in 2006 and Dax has been doing solo work since, but I personally prefer this to it.

Baths - Lovely Bloodflow

It's been awhile since I've listened to pretty much anything anticon. but this is at least pretty dang interesting. I don't know if there is anyone that would prefer this music to everything else in music, but I'd like to see a backroom dubstep remix of this.

Fungi Girls - Seafaring Pyramids

This is a quick little album from the Texas group Fungi Girls. Recommended if you are into the noise pop and garage rock lo-fi sounds of late such as No Age and Best Coast. Not as noisy as Wavves but has a bit of a dreamy quality to it but without the surf elements. Perhaps the genre should be called popgaze or psychgaze or dreamgaze. Don't hate me, its almost entirely out of jest, but perhaps everything needs at least one -core, -wave, -gaze suffix to help it along. The best way to describe it comes out as "No Age slowed down with less punk and maybe more reverb."

Lullabye Arkestra - Ampgrave

Post-rock from two people. The drummer, Justin, if from Do Make Say Think. When I say post-rock I say this VERY loosely. At times there is more in common with fuzzed out garage rock sounds from the 60s a la Oblivion or the Gories. There is typical post-rock instrumentation at times and at others its just distorted bass and drums. The bass and the girl singing reminds me of Scout Niblett. Maybe those reasons are obvious, maybe they are a mystery to you. Enjoy and scream along.

Air Dubai

This next group is Air Dubai, a Denver area hip-hop group. I first learned of them when they opened for the Flobots on the University of Wyoming campus with a full band (a la Flobots). I've seen them since, by themselves, and they definitely hold their own on the stage. Their earlier releases were pretty poorly produced and almost nothing like their energetic live show, but this full length has proven to be quite nice. This is not as intense as the live show, but it has full instrumentation like they had at their shows. The album is pretty poppy and at times has more in common with radio pop than hip-hop, but lets be honest, that's ok. They aren't trying to be something they are not, which makes me give them mad props.

New Blog

Here I intend to post music I have been enjoying.

I'll start with a group called Malachai. I bought the album "The Ugly Side of Love" a couple months ago for real cheap hoping to pick up some weird psychedelic mess and I wasn't entirely disappointed. Some of the music is quite poppy (definitely not a bad thing) and almost radio-esque jams while others are more on the experimental side of things (although not very far). Information about the group is actually a bit elusive which makes me what to know more, but they are from Bristol and are often compared to other Britol-based trip-hop such as Portishead. In my opinion, this holds little comparison to Portishead besides being sample based, and I'm not sure alot of it is. I know for a fact that this song it (via the liner notes). I think this is the "single" from the album and rightfully so.

Malachai - Snowflake

Another poppy jam.

Malachai - Shitkicker

This last one is more looping and experimentation

Malachai - Only For You
